Data sources

A local store, and the pipes into it

Chartboard keeps its data in the CBDatastore — a mapped hierarchical disk structure that is transparent to the user and needs no database server. It accepts data from numerous sources in both proprietary and industry-standard formats.

The CBDatastore

Chartboard organises its data — OHLCv, shorts, events, timelines and more — in a mapped hierarchical disk structure. The hierarchy accepts daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly series from 1 January 1900 onwards; data for coarser periods is synthesised from the immediate primary period. Whole stores, or parts of them, can be exchanged between workspaces.

  • Multiple stores are supported, with manual copy-paste data exchange between them.
  • An independent explorer is instantiated for each attached store. Multiple instances must have unique internal root names — CBa, CBc, CBe and so on.
  • Capacity is limited only by available disk space, with data sets paged as required. Utilities exist for flushing, defragmenting and validating.
  • The directory hierarchy is intuitive and may be zipped, copied, pasted and backed up independently of Chartboard.
  • The securities hierarchy and its members are managed by you.
  • Datasets are organised on a country and market basis.
  • Inspection facilities exist for the raw data.
  • Store locations are independent — usually C:\ProgramData\Chartboard, C:\Chartboard or C:\Users\<name>\Chartboard.
  • Stores can be configured to dynamically monitor download folders for updates.

Two things worth knowing before you rely on it: stores cannot be merged manually, outside or independently of Chartboard. And an actively updated store should be backed up periodically.

Starter datastore

An operational sample store for the ASX is available for download. It is a superset of the initial Chartboard setup data and may be refreshed independently as needed — or extended and maintained from your own data sources instead.

  • Contains a variety of data types: OHLCvs, events, timelines and shades.
  • Some 100+ securities across the ASX and US markets, with more addable later.
  • The dataset paths are compatible with the sample charts shipped with the application.
  • It is a superset of the SampleDatastore.Msgracbs shipped with the product and carries the same internal root name.
  • The parent CBDatastore.Msgracbs folder holds a hierarchical dataset structure, mapped and maintained transparently through Chartboard. Whole folders may be shared between installations.

After download, deploy the contents to a location such as C:\ProgramData\CBDatastore or C:\CBDatastore, then attach it via Ribbon Bar → WS Attachments → Datastore Panel → Attach…

Open, high, low, close and volume

OHLCv data is accepted from numerous sources in proprietary and industry-standard formats, as daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly series from 1 January 1900 onwards. Data for coarser periods is synthesised from the immediate primary period. It persists in the localised, graph-shaped, noSQL-style personal data store described above.

End-of-day period prices — single security

Chartboard supports the manual import of single-security downloads in these formats:

  • Metastock
  • Insight Trader
  • Ezychart
  • StockEasy
  • Certain CSV formats

These formats usually provide open, high, low, close and volume on a daily basis, from which weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly data is generated automatically. Imports can be complete snapshots or defined period updates for individual securities. The application ships with sample ASX end-of-day data files.

Single-security data is imported via the {Import…} context menu item for the relevant security. Chartboard can also be set up to scan a preset download directory automatically and run the relevant import — see the {Configuration…} context menu item for the market.

Single-day prices — multiple securities

Manual import of multiple-security downloads for a single date, in the same format families. Only existing stock codes created under a market will be updated. Multiple versions of a file can be downloaded for the same date at different times.

Such imports form a complete market snapshot for a particular date. They are imported via the {Bulk EoD Update…} market context menu item, which covers all securities. Again, a preset download directory can be scanned automatically.

Sample files for the ASX equities market are available on the downloads page, so the import path can be trialled against your own store before you commit to it.

Short-selling data

Chartboard accepts complementary short-selling data from numerous sources, as daily outstanding volume and percentage-of-total ratios. Data for coarser periods is synthesised from the immediate primary period. Shorts data attaches to the existing OHLCv data sets and persists in the same store; whole stores or parts of them can be exchanged between workspaces.

OHLCvs throughout this site means OHLCv data with complementary shorts data attached.

ASX shorts are collated by ASIC and published as CSV files. They import via the {Bulk Shorts Update…} root context menu item, which covers all securities — see the {Configuration…} context menu item for the relevant market.
